Adjective Suffixes

In Unit 1 in our textbook we had a look at adjective suffixes. A suffix is a particle that is added to a word to form a new word with a different meaning or function. Here are some suffixes that are commonly added to nouns in order to form adjectives.

Adjective Suffixes
-able, -ible	capable of being	edible, presentable, abominable, credible
-al	pertaining to	regional, grammatical, emotional, coastal
-esque	reminiscent of	picturesque, statuesque, burlesque
-ful	notable for	fanciful, resentful, woeful, doubtful
-ic, -ical	pertaining to	musical, mythic, domestic
-ious, -ous	characterized by	nutritious, portentous, studious
-ish	having the quality of	fiendish, childish, snobbish
-ive	having the nature of	creative, punitive, divisive, decisive
-less	without	endless, ageless, lawless, effortless
-y	characterized by	sleazy, hasty, greasy, nerdy, smelly

If you  add -ly to an adjective, you'll create an adverb:

• Calm - calmly
• Beautiful - beautifully
• Logical - logically

"The Logical Song", by Supertramp, features a good number of adjectives and adverbs created with these suffixes.

Preparing for the Initial Test

In our next class full-group class we are going to do an Initial Test. This will allow me to have an idea of the general skills of the group and, very important, to discover the abilities and needs of each one
of you.

This exam is important for the group and for you individually, as it will be your first mark in English this year. To prepare for it you should:

• Review the section Grammar Basics on pages 122- 130 of the Student's Book. 
• Review the Writing Guide on pages 152-164.
• Have a look at the rest of the sections (Glossary, Functional Language, Easily Confused Words,...)
• Use these Revision worksheets extra practice. Do:
• exercise #1 on each page
• at least 12 exercises in total
• at least 2 exercises on each page. 
• Use this answer key to check your answers.
